bed–time / An Universal and Intersectional Sex Education
Platform That Actually Appeals to Teenagers / 2023
Navigating through the content on bed–time, created with a tone of voice that is personal, humorous and playful.

The premise of this project was to try and design a solution that could improve the sexual rights of people with disabilities. Disabled people are often perceived as asexual and their sexual needs are rarely addressed in sex education, which are two major contributors to the general exclusion of them in society (RFSU 2021).
Contrary to sex toy websites, many of the existing sex education platforms directed at teenagers tend to make the topic of sex seem medicinal and dull. So, I decided to design bed–time: a platform with a focus on developing a visual profile and tone of voice that feels youthful and fun – in other words, a communication style that actually appeals to teenagers. I also wanted bed–time to normalize disabled people’s sexual needs, which is why universal design became a crucial part of the solution. Instead of dividing the content into a “us and them”, I decided to always cover the sexual perspectives of disabled people alongside with those of others.
Tone of voice: “Do you want to know which lubricant to use when? How to tell someone that you love them? Or how to give good head
once and for all? Then you've come to the right place. We are your guide to sex, identity, relationships, and much more. Kind of like a
big sibling, really. We believe that sex shouldbe for everyone, and that's why we work hard to include all perspectives in our content.”
The images resemble the scenes one can recognize from sexual contexts, e.g. a hand clutching
the side of a bed or a thong thrown on the floor. They are highly exposured and blurry close-ups,
which makes it less important who is pictured and rather what mood it tries to tap into – making
it more relateable for everyone.
The varying width in ITC Avant Garde Gothic‘s characters contributes
to its charachteristic playfulness. Apart from being a stylistic choice, the
dash between ‘bed’ and ‘time’ serves to symbolize the activities that
potentially present themselves at bedtime. The content is written with the ambition to live up to the standards of universal and intersectional design. E.g. this article
about sex toys is organized after genital type instead of sex and the tips for disabled people are interlaced alongside those
for ablebodied people.
