Youth Club
/ A Hyperfeminine Title Sequence for a
TV-show on All Things Low-Culture
/ 2022

Turn sound on. The hyper feminine title sequence of Youth Club – a show on all things low culture.

H My experience is that culture that predominantly women engage with is generally considered unsophisticated and unintellectual. This was the benchmark for the title sequence that I created for Youth Club – an imaginary show covering the epitome of lowbrow, also known as pop- and youth culture.

Going about the project, I was interested in exploring the visual universe of hyper femininity; and its potential of reclaiming the aesthetics and stereotypes that traditionally have been used against women. With a target audience of young, urban women I chose video as medium and sought to create a composition of kitschy objects which were carefully selected to serve as a teaser for the show’s contents and message. This project really awakened my curiosity as a designer and pushed me to experiment with a medium (video) that was new to me, in a playful way.

Reimagining the stills from the title sequence with the help of riso print,

Stills from the video material. Finding the right shade of
pink was crucial and time consuming, it ocurred to me that
the light looked very different on camera.
Close-up of a toe seperator and bling. The objects were not only carefully selected to serve as a teaser for the show’s contents,
but also my own agenda – to reclaim aesthetics and stereotypes that traditionally have been used against women.

Before filming I explored a series of compositions, which was
crucial to solving one of the biggest challenges – how to make
inanimate objects intriguing.
