Youth Club / A Hyperfeminine Title Sequence for a
Show on All Things Low-Culture
/ 2022

The title sequence on youth club.

HBlomsterdalen or ”The Valley of Flowers”, puts the complicated relationship between Denmark (coloniser) and Greenland (colonised) into discussion. It’s a dark and honest portrayal of the consequences of not belonging in society, and sheds light on Greenland’s suicide culture. How can I design a book that – cover-to-cover – reflects the gravity of these themes?

The final design is minimalistic and (apart from the red thread) monochrome. The raven is a recurring and important symbol throughout the novel; and I wanted to make it a key element of the cover. They’re drawn in black ink, giving them a fleeting expression. Each chapter of the novel starts with a chilling description of suicide and by letting it stand alone on an otherwise empty page, the reader is forced to pause and take it all in. From the stitched back that is left unglued and bare to the irregularities of the black ink, the design balances between brutality and fragility; reflecting Korneliussen’s style of writing.
